Prostate Cancer : the Silent Killer
Prostate Cancer kills about 12000 men in the UK every year – yet it is not well publicised and there is, unlike for Breast Cancer, no routine screening.
It is also silent, as there are often no symptoms and it is very often not diagnosed until it is too late, the cancer has spread outside the prostate to other vital organs and it is therefore incurable.
Physical symptoms which should be reported to the GP immediately are difficulty in urinating, unusually frequent urination and any unusual lumps or pains around the area.
There are two very important tests that men can have at their GP to determine if they have the disease :
- Digital rectal exam – while not the most pleasant examination it allows the GP to feel if the
prostate gland is soft and normal – or if it feels hard and lumpy suggesting possible cancerous growth
- PSA blood test – this tests for an abnormally raised level of PSA in the bloodstream which can be a sign of cancer
These tests are not conclusive as very often an abnormal result may be the result of an enlarged prostate and Prostatis which is not a sign of cancer. But having the tests early gives men the opportunity to get further tests – in particular the prostate biopsy which enables the Prostate gland to be fully examined.
Too often men delay going to the GP with symptoms for fear of embarrassment or because they think it can’t happen to them.
However in many cases Prostate cancer can be successfully treated If it is caught before it has spread and it is crucial that this message is spread as widely as possible .
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men in the UK. Over 40,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. Every hour 1 man dies from prostate cancer. One in four Black men will develop prostate cancer at some point in their lives.
Men United – The Facts:
Men United v Prostate Cancer is our call for men to join together in a movement against the common enemy of prostate cancer. The aim is to build a united front of men against this disease. We want to get the message out about one of the UK’s biggest man killers, support men affected by it, and intensify the search for more reliable tests and treatments for the future.
The core audience is men over 45 who urgently need to know about this disease, and to do something about it. Men United is not exclusively for men. This is a movement for men, but women will be critical supporters and activists within it. But, the core idea is that men are very consciously facing their health and banding together to right a wrong.
